Recoil of JusticeAuthor’s Notes

I hope you enjoyed reading Recoil of Justice as much as I enjoyed creating it. I am not an author by trade and have not been trained in writing creative literature, at least not in the traditional sense. This is my first attempt at creating a work for others’ enjoyment. I hope that wasn’t too evident.

This is not to say I didn’t have teachers. Any writing skills I may possess were learned through reading the magnificent works of Brad Thor, Jack Carr, Harlan Coben, David Baldacci, and many others. I will also give them full credit for any writing skills I may lack. Hey, I have to blame someone. Fans of their work may notice that I have paid homage to some of their words and characters in my story. It was meant as a show of respect and admiration. I hope that was evident. I also included some thinly veiled references to not only my favorite film of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, but also to my favorite novel– Larry McMurtry’s masterpiece, Lonesome Dove. It was the first book I read in my life by choice. I have never regretted a single second I spent reading all 943 pages.

Writing this novel was an exercise in humility and vulnerability. After completing the first draft, I shared my manuscript with a friend. Hello, vulnerability. He responded, “Six feet and 185 lbs., huh?” Although there are many similarities between Ryan Wolfe’s life and mine, I had to explain that Ryan Wolfe is not me. He is the man I would like to be. You know – younger, smarter, better looking. I had always heard, “Write what you know.” Weaving certain aspects of my life into Ryan’s was the easiest way to connect with the character. Those who know me best can attest that the similarities are minimal.

The friend I shared my rough draft with name is Randy Norman. That name may sound familiar to you. In exchange for charitable donations, many authors I love offer to use the names of the benefactors in their books as characters. Fantastic idea. Not having that type of pull, I opted to use the names of many of my friends in my novel. For more on the “People Behind the Name,” please sign up for updates on this website. I think you will be pleased to see that none of them are cartel members.
However, there is one character in Recoil of Justice for whom I tried to stay true to the person who inspired the character. I undoubtedly fell woefully short. Virtually everything about her character in my story is true of the person. Sadly, the fact that I have missed her every day for the past six years and will continue every day forward is also true. I love you, Tree.

Oh, and one last truth worth mentioning from my story. I really did miss a deer six times from ninety yards, and my dad really said, “Well, how many did you kill?” I never did become a great shot after that, though.
If you enjoyed my book, please feel free to leave a glowing review. If you didn’t enjoy it, please feel free to review a completely different book you did enjoy. It’s worth the try!
